HARO
It was Ann Everett who told me about HARO. It stands for "Help a Reporter Out." http://www.helpareporter.com/
You sign up, and three times a day, HARO sends you queries from people looking for experts, or in some cases just ordinary people, to be interviewed and quoted for articles.
Ideally, you get interviewed for something that ties into your book. And then you ask to be credited as Joe Blow, author of Blowing Joe.
I just scored a quick interview for an online mag - horse-related, which ties into Finding Sara. Sadly, they didn't mention the book, and they didn't use any of the photos I had taken of me doing an actual equine massage. But it was still fun, and heck - gets my name out for a minute or two.

Anyway, just wanted to mention one more avenue for self-promotion.
