free short story contest

from winning writers newsletter-- April 2012

Closing Next Month
On The Premises Short Story Contest (no fee)
Online Submission Deadline: May 31

77% of web-based fiction magazines pay their fiction writers nothing.

So do 60% of print-only fiction magazines!

If you'd like to try getting paid for your fiction, why not consider us? Since 2006, On The Premises magazine has aimed to promote newer and/or relatively unknown writers who can write creative, compelling stories told in effective, uncluttered, and evocative prose. We've never charged a reading fee or publication fee, and we pay between $40 and $180 for short stories that fit each issue's broad story premise. We publish stories in nearly every genre (literary/realist, mystery, light/dark fantasy, light/hard sci-fi, slipstream) aimed at adult readers (no children's fiction). Our most recent issue featured seven authors we'd never published before and one author making his first fiction sale.

The premise of the current contest is And Now For Something Completely Different. Humorous prose is not taken seriously in today's literary world. We aim to rectify that. We dare you to write a short piece of fiction that makes us laugh, or at least smile. If you can make us laugh and think, or laugh and feel deeply about someone or something, all the better.

We will not accept parodies of another author's specific fictional characters or world(s). No exceptions!

You can find details and instructions for submitting your story at http://www.onthepremises.com/current_contest.html. To be informed when new contests are launched, subscribe to our free, short, monthly newsletter.

On The Premises magazine is recognized in Duotrope, Writer's Market, Ralan.com, the Short Story and Novel Writers guidebooks, and other short story marketing resources.

Re: free short story contest

Nadine--

Do you think they would accept one of my conversations? I don't think I have anything funny in a short story. I am trying to be brave and start putting stuff out there.

Your conversations could be considered a story. So why not? Just has to be completely different. Maybe I'll do an Aran Islander dialogue.

Nadine--

I think that's a great idea! I would like to read Aran Islander dialog, in fact I was thinking of getting that book. Can you tell me the title again?

Thanks for letting us know about this, I'm going to look over what I have.

There's John Synge's book about Aran and there's Tomas O Crohan's The Islandman which is a classic about the Blaskets. Many little stories there. Synge's book includes the tale that was the basis for Playboy of the Western World (a fellow who kills his father with a shovel). Synge lived with the natives of Inis Mor and learned the language. That was before 1900. The movie Man of Aran was made in 1930 (approx) and has nothing to do with Synge's stories. Another book just came out: Robert Kanigel's On an Irish Island. He's with MIT. He describes all the ventures by linguists into the islands of the western coast of Ireland.

Re: free short story contest

Hi all. Take a look at Nadine's helpful original post on this. Every four months this e-zine runs a themed short fiction contest. The winners get a small cash prize and publication. The theme of the last contest was humor and I sent them a story. I did not win nor was the story accepted for publication, but I did place well (in top 10 out of 300 or so entries) and was given some good critical feedback.

The theme for the current contest is TIME. Many writers here did time machine droubles a while back and you might want to expand them a bit (or come up with another Time related theme) and give this a shot. Acceptable length is 1K to 5K words. The contest closes Sept. 29th. Their website is:
www.onthepremises.com/current_contest.html.

Good luck.
Paul

Thanks for the reminder Paul. I just checked that out. I had forgotten about the site. Not replacing brain cells as often.

Re: free short story contest

Small prize, but they give you feed back which might be worth more than the prize. The entry fee - FREE - meets my criteria for contests, So, I've added the site to my favorites and hopefully will get around to submitting a story. Thanks for the heads up. Take care. Vern
