How dark to go in YA

I'm working on a really dark peice at the moment and am curious on everyone's thoughts.  How dark can you make a book in YA?

Well, The Hunger Games contains a gladiatorial contest between teenagers, where There Can Only Be One...

My dark piece is a serial killer and all he does to his victims.  Not sure how graphic or dark to go with it.

Probably no darker than a black hole. Take care. Vern

Just write it, April. You can always lighten it up if you have to later

What ever people might think is too dark now will be eclipsed by something even more edgy soon enough. I say go the whole way when you write it and then reflect, otherwise you run the risk of things coming off half -baked. smile Tess xx

I agree, you can always tone it down later. Besides kids that would pick up the book in the first place are probably looking for something dark - those that can't handle it, won't be reading it! I used to read Stephen King at that age. x
