Re: Just in case you were wondering, two of the top ten songs ever
Stop it, Max! For chrissakes, good as they are, those aren't songs! They're compositions.
The two best "songs" of all time are, and these are indisputable as far as I'm concerned in the moment, are:
The Brothers Johnson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbxUtFDK … fle=713681
AND
Boz Scaggs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m06n-WB8O8w
Why? Because I'm in that sorta mood. Forget about objective subjectivity, isn't "mood" the utmost criteria? I'm feeling sexy about myself right about now. ![]()
Ten minutes from now I might feel angry. Or sad. Or flat out confused... Which would naturally engender a wholly different top-two list.
And so it goes...

Ah, one more!. Oscar Aleman was playing Hendrix licks in the '30s. Guitarist for Josephine Baker. Oscar was the baddest dude around... well after Dajango. Music is a big world. Last time I checked, all songs are compositions.
Oscar was also King of the South American Blues

Re: Just in case you were wondering, two of the top ten songs ever
I think Lugwig's Moonlight Sonata was a number one hit... really. It made his career zoom and his fan magazines told the tale. Women swooned.
Jeff Beck's album, "Wired" was number one on the jazz charts. I swooned.
Then there is Willie Nelson's , "Crazy", sung by Patsy Cline. Number one on country charts.
But I think the number one hit of all time (for Americans mostly) is God Bless America. Hearing that on 9-11 brought me to streaming tears, and I still tear up thinking about that day, that music. It's the penultimate folk song, with 'Taps' being the last and best folk song when that day arrives.
The power of music is awesome.

Favorite songs:
Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue (no, it's more than an airline commercial)
Reach Out, I'll Be There - Four Tops
Don't tell anyone else because to everyone who knows me I'm a Led Zepplin/Pink Floyd typa guy.

Good Vibrations? Isn't that a song about a marital aid?
The saint answered: "With singing, weeping, laughing, and mumbling do I praise the God who is my God." / When Zarathustra was alone, he said to his heart: "Could it be possible! This old saint in the forest has not yet heard that God is dead!"

Just don't ask Q.X.T about Micheal Jackson's Beat It.
...or for that matter Devo's Whip It, Wilson Pickett's Hold On, I'm Coming, Bee Geese's How Deep Is Your Love or AC/DC's Got You by the Balls.
The lantern revealed a symbol of an eye with long, wavy lashes like tentacles, painted white and deeply engraved into the stone. A breeze lifted her hair as Shadyia glanced down the ancient passage.
“What’s down there?” she asked.(Chapter 9)

Max,
I thought I wrote you about this before, but I can't seem to find it when I did an author search on the forums (or is the plural "fora"?). But when you talk about the above J.S. Bach work I am always reminded of this great work of American Literature:
A lady from North Carolina
Stretched fiddlestrings across her vagina
So with proper-sized cocks
What was sex became Bach's
Toccata & Fugue in D minor

I'm off to youtube to view all of the above, and leave max alone, even though he's wrong. If K-tel did classical I bet Vivaldi's 4 seasons would top the shop.

I love Vivaldi's Tempesta di Mare when played by Il Giardino Armonico. They ROCK!
Yet, no song, really....

Re: Just in case you were wondering, two of the top ten songs ever
OMG, you guys have got me wandering back down the lanes of my lost youth! Been here in Tehrangeles for so long I'd just about forgotten how great Hotel California is. LOVE Rhapsody in Blue, though for me it's a right race with Porgy & Bess as a complete work.
My personal all time fave is a Persian love song that starts with the words 'you have two black eyes...'

I always stop what I'm doing to listen to Hotel California, and any song on Springsteen's The Wild, the Innocent, and the E-street Shuffle.

True confession time...I did not know there was an actual "Hotel California". Just saw a show that included it. Gorgeous, weird place. I'd always thought it was a 'bad trip' Don Henley took! Color me embarrassed! ![]()
