Smaller pool of SS entries this year?

The last time I entered SS (Strongest Start) was 2010.  Back then there were several categories to enter.  And overall seemed like a healthy amount of contest entries.  It's now about a month and a half from the 2012 deadline, so I imagine there will be come entries coming.  But I wondered if it seems like there are fewer entries this year?

Right now I see about 51 entries.

I know for my last post here, there were like 126 views, though only 6 actual posts.  I know some people prefer to lurk than to interact.  Though I think the most vibrant online writing communities have a pretty active participation level on the discussion boards.  ABNA (Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards) is one example.  http://www.amazon.com/ABNA   Those boards are active year round, even when the contest is not happening.  And every once in a while I poke my head in at http://www.Authonomy.com  Though for my tastes there's too much spamming for reviews and too much pressure to give reviews.  NBW is much fairer I think.

Overall, how is the activity level on NBW these days?  Is it about the same as it's been in the past few years?  More writers?  Fewer writers?  Just curious.  Anything we can to create more community here?  I know one big way that interactions happen here is through review exchanges which is unique and great!

Re: Smaller pool of SS entries this year?

Even though I joined about two years ago, I've only become a regular here back in July. From what I noticed, it seems the activity waxes and wanes depending on what's happening around here. It picks up when contests come around and tends to ebb when they're done. Also, things happen in people's lives that limit their time on the site.  I usually stop by the boards every day, even if I don't post anything.

I actually prefer this writer's community over the others I have belonged to because of its relatively smaller size. Maybe that's just me (I tend to be a bit antisocial), but those others sites feel so impersonal. Here, for better or worse, we learn a lot about one another.

I haven't been paying attention to the contest this year because I'm not entering. tongue

@ Tirzah, I have seen your name around these parts for some time.  Surely you have something you're proud enough to enter or revise.  Have you done the Strongest Start contest before?  I always find it a learning experience as it teaches me more about how to engage my reader better and better. At least I hope it does.

@ JE, I can see the advantage of a smaller writer's community.  Though I'm a bit of a social butterfly so I'm ok in a big or small pond.    cool

Re: Smaller pool of SS entries this year?

Well, Interesting topic here. I honestly am a lurker as I usually feel that I don't have anything real to add to the conversation. I am starting to realize that if I want to become a better writer, I need to be more interactive with the community here. I know I have alot to learn and there are quite a few amazing people here that I admire.

As to the compition, I honestly think it should pick up soon. Maybe some other writers are waiting for the right moment to enter or some other reasons. My personal entry this year is more of an attempt to see how I would stack up against the other guys/gals here. Win or lose, I am going to learn something.

Hi Kris, that's probably true that things will pick up as we get closer to the deadline.  Though personally I really like that I've been able to submit my 3 chapters early and to benefit from the feedback of my fellow writers before the judging begins.  Good look with your submission.  You're right to get more interactive.

Nope ...nothing I think is good enough.  I have some with potential down the road but nothing I'd feel good about entering.  That and my longer pieces aren't on topics that usually win (dark humor).  I am writing a thriller this year but it needs a lot of work. It's two or three years away from this contest.

Re: Smaller pool of SS entries this year?

I'm one of those antisocial types too, mostly because my business takes all the time in the world. (a restaurant) I've been here since 2008, on and off, I don't speak english that well so I posted the first three chapters of my book Twilight inc. a while ago and based on the comments I received began to work on it outside of NBW through direct email with some other writers.

In my humble opinion I felt sometimes like I was pulled through many different points of view about the story through reviews and comments that I began to lose sight of what I wanted to do and instead began to write to please. My feeling... I hope It's not endemic.

So, I ended up changing the name of the story and self publishing it. www.guardiansinc.com  but I always checked back at NBW and even sent the completed manuscript to a couple of community writers for a more, let's say  "personal critique" before publishing.

I still think that posting the beginning of the manuscript, the first 3-4 chapters is a great thing, but then, once you get a feel of how things are going and whom can be an objective reviewer (I don't mean favorable wink I mean objective criticism but taking into account where i want to go! My story got ripped to pieces many times over! ) you can try to develop a more close relationship with those writers and become like a little club within the community.

Of course, it all begins by posting so its a step all writers should take.

About the SS competition I will post the first three chapters of the second book and see what happens!

Cheers!

Hi dracognan, glad you jumped into the water.  Your website (SEE LINK ABOVE) is terrific!  Nice trailer too.  I agree that once
you try out some chapters, it can be nice to work with a few of them off line sometimes.  Good luck in SS.

My SS entry is a new version of THE HOPE STORE.

Here is the trailer! It's kind of cool and different.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGUcPk5qqgI

Tirz, I never think my work is good enough to end up on a best sellers list, but I enter this contest every year because I love competition and the feedback is very helpful. It's not always about winning. Not that it wouldn't be truly awesome. LOLOLOL I entered two this year - a horror (I know! I know-so not me!) and my Fairy YA.

Enter Plum, just for the hell of it. It's such a fun read.

Re: Smaller pool of SS entries this year?

Hey SS writer community, can I ask a question?

I'm very new to this site and have entered (I thought) the Strongest Start Novel Competition. I understand that we need to enter 3 chapters to qualify and I have published the first three chapters of my YA novel, BOMBER BABE Chapters 1-3, as one entry.

A reviewer commented that he believed I should re-enter each chapter separately to be considered for the SS contest. Is that what is expected?
Any advice? Should I re-enter each Chapter separately?

Re: Smaller pool of SS entries this year?

Hi f m, yes I would definitely enter the three chapters as three separate entries.  Because people will want to give you feedback on individual chapters for the contest.  Not one huge group of three chapters.  To review three full chapters requires a TON of reading by the reviewer, and you probably wouldn't get many reviews.  Those are my thoughts.

You might want to contact Sol, who runs NBW, to help you do this.  If you do it on your own -- I think you'd have to read an review lots of other writing.  But since you've already do that to post the 3 in 1, Sol might be able to resolve it.

*** REVISE.  Okay, I just checked your entry.  At least the three chapters are short.  Again, you could ask Sol for his advice.
