Dill Carver's recent email

Woke up this morning and found this on the laptop:

Hi Nadine

Thanks for looking me up with your wonderful news. It is thrilling to learn that your book has found its cover. Nora's life and times are a labour of love and that shines out from the pages. It has been a good while since I read ‘Nora's Farewell’ and I can tell you that it resonates. So much of the prose (volume upon volume) I’ve read since is lost to the mist of memory within me, but your Impetuous Heart is retained and with clarity.

I was (am) extremely impressed by the way you characterize your prose within this novel using inflection and turn-of-phrase to produce a clear Irish voice rather than resort to brutal phonetic word-chopping to produce the accent. That’s no bull-shine Nadine, because your Nora remains my primary reference upon ‘how to produce an authentic accent within a written voice.’

I am looking forward to seeing ‘Impetuous Heart’ upon my shelf and for you and your story I feel the heady sensation that Roald Dahl once coined;

“So Matilda's strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea.“

That is the thrill Nadine, the minds you will entertain, bolster and enthral.

I hope your Clan is well and I’m sure they are all shining with pride for you their Queen Victorious.

I’m proud of you too.

Sincerely, Dill x

(Can this man write or what? I really miss him from this site. He was a profound influence on me while I wrote Nora's Farewell aka Impetuous Heart.)

Nadine--

I think he left the site before I joined but I have to agree with him. Impetuous Heart is a great novel and I think Dublin is going to be just as good! I am proud of you too!

Wish you knew him. A British soldier stationed in Northern Ireland, witness to a lot of horror. I relied on him for a cold eye on my work. He was a bulwark for me. Also suggested a Rolls Royce ride for Nora. Can you believe it? I learned from him more than I can ever say. Love the guy. His own writing was mind-blowing. Edgy, battle-scarred.

I'll second everything you say, and underline it, about Dill. I'd buy anything he recommends without opening it.

The best thing about the internet is becoming friends with people in other countries and getting the real story of what's going on in their part of the world instead of depending on the world's news organizations.

From your glowing description, Nadine, now I wish Dill would come back!

Yup, a great guy---and funny!  When he and Kat got going it was hilarious.

Loved his writing--a master of setting the scene.

I guess we'll never know if the seeing eye dog gets killed.  I think that's why he left the site:  too many of us begged him not to kill it, but I think that is what he had in mind.

Re: Dill Carver's recent email

I remember Dill. He was an eloquent reviewer if ever there was one. And a fabulous writer. I am one of those writers that uses 'phonetic brutal word-chopping' to produce an accent', though with extreme restraint. He never liked it but very kindly backtracked on that position as he read on.

It would be nice if he did come back smile

Re: Dill Carver's recent email

I chanced upon some of Dill's work here and it blew me away! I often come back here to look for more, but no luck.

There was an Army story about a mock suicide in a barracks that went wrong. Does anyone have a link to that or a copy of it?

It was great writing and I can’t find anything like it anywhere else. Do any members know other places on-line where Dill publishes his writing or is he in print?
