Welcome to the Sci-fi and other Speculative Fiction Forum

Hello everyone,

For the old hats at this game, I hope I can be a good moderator for this forum for you.  I'll give it my best shot anyway.

As for the new visitors here:

This forum is intended for works that find themselves in a variety of subgenres, somewhere between here and there, then and now, and maybe.  Science fiction these days doesn't just involve aliens, other planets, spaceships, etc.  It's a universe of the could-be's, the what if's, and the truly unimaginable imagined.  Don't be shy. Don't worry if your story doesn't quite fit into any of the genres listed either. Maybe you'll be the father or mother of a whole new subgenre.

This is the place to ask questions, share ideas and fascinating things, have fun, ask for help, offer help, modestly beg for reviews lol and encourage one another in a very difficult, intensely detailed, realm of fiction-writing.  It's not a dead genre by any means.  It's just taken on a huge family of exciting paths to take.

Constructive criticism is desired.  Positive or helpful comments are welcomed.  Negative, hurtful, destructive comments will be deleted and reported to Sol. If you aren't sure about something you're wanting to post, just email me, or ask one of the other writers you trust on the site.

TNBW has been invaluable in getting me published and it can do the same for you if you use the site as it's intended to be used.  Don't be afraid to surf the other forums for expert advice, news, contests, publishing opportunities, etc.  There are so many excellent authors on TNBW with truly insightful things to help you along, no matter what your genre is.  Many reviewers cross-review in different genres as well.

To those new to the site, just hang in there.  It takes a wee bit of time to get yourself going with a group of reviewers.  Don't get discouraged too quickly.  If you aren't getting any reviews, ask for them either in the Writing Feedback Forum or here.  Novels don't get as many reviews as short stories and poetry.  If you get three to four on your chapters, that's actually good.  Usually first chapters will get the most.  Lots of people stop in for a look to see if it's a story in their comfort zone.  We all have our genre or style preferences.  Don't be put off if a reviewer doesn't return.  It doesn't mean they didn't like it, but it might not have been their particular interest area.

As a mild suggestion, remember that courtesy and patience gets you farther here than screaming or whining or complaining.  There's going to be gripes now and then and as long as you make a good, solid, fact-based argument, you'll get attention. Just make sure you do it in the right forum.  You can even gripe about me, but be sure to put that in perfect rhyme format... (just kidding).  Evil plots, conspiracies, and world domination, is accepted too, but we do charge extra for that. tongue

Most of all, have fun writing.  A novel that you enjoy constructing is worth its weight in gold, and generally shows through in the writing itself.  Don't be afraid to play with tenses and styles until you find that comfortable place you belong in.

Re: Welcome to the Sci-fi and other Speculative Fiction Forum

Hi.  I've been on the site for a while but I've never dipped into the forums because I don't have time.  Also because I have ADD and forget that they're there.  I drift around the writing wheel, sometimes crime, sometimes lit, sometimes humor, and sometimes sci-fi.  I even wrote a fantasy novel for my kids and it got published.  They loved it.

So how's this work?  We post, we chat, we laugh, we cry?  And then we re-write and do it all over again?

PS:  Kydd, thank you for the nice review of my review.  I'm not a fantasy freak.  The only fantasy I've read is Tolkien and I was in jail when I read The Lord of the Rings (not for a felony; for being a minor in possession of alcohol.  They clanged me for 21 days.  Long story).  The books were all I had to escape from that place and I love them dearly for that.  The fantasy I had published was not very fantastic.  All of the characters were human, not an elf or a dwarf in sight.   I can't imagine why people bagged on your story.   I found the opening chapter the literary equivalent of sliding into a easy chair and relaxing.   Which is what you're supposed to do when you read a book.

Anyway, I've probably already violated the rules of the forum.  I told you I have ADD.  I drift.

Best wishes, and I will come back and see what's shakin' on your new forum.

Re: Welcome to the Sci-fi and other Speculative Fiction Forum

Yep, we post, we chat, we laugh (snorting makes it funnier), and we cry (but strange, alien tears, cyber tears, or steam-forced tears).  And then we do it all over again, uh huh.

Hehe, underage drinking. Fer shame!  So, if you'd been in Arkansas that would be...what, 12? Whahahahaha. Couldn't have been too bad of a jail though if it had LOTR to read.  big_smile

The influential fantasy books I read were the Baum Oz books, Jules Verne, R. L. Stevenson books, the Scarecrow series (the one about the 18th C. English Robin Hood--not the horror flicks), LOTR, the Turok Son of Stone comics, Lloyd Alexander's Black Cauldron series and Westmark series, Piers Anthony's Spell for Chameleon, Eddings Pawn of Prophecy, and the Springer's The Silver Sun (which made me cry and cry). I was never into dragons and elves and fairies and women running around with swords (unless they were psychotic serial killers), LOTR and me excepted (I was in the SCA for quite a few years and learned to fight Florentine style with swords). tongue

So I decided I needed to explore the genre a bit more.  My fantasy story has all the expected elements in it: dragons, really evil dudes, smelly shapeshifters, giants, dwarves, cannibals, killer storms, mermaids, talking animals, magical places, strange spells, prophetic dreams, epic battles, witches and seawitches, wizards, naked promiscuous fairies, and of course, a love interest. And I try to really fling the angst and suffering around. lol Did I miss anything?

I don't have ADD, but maybe I should have that checked... LOL. I seem to have all the same symptoms...whahahaha.

It will be a pleasure to have you drop in and share tidbits or whatever!  Happy to have you join in.

Kydd

Re: Welcome to the Sci-fi and other Speculative Fiction Forum

Hi, All -

THANK YOU, Kydd, for the heads up on this forum.  Took me a while to figure out how to get here but now I'm really looking forward to having other sci fi folk to chat with.

Hey, I actually got 4 reviews on Home World!   THANK YOU again for letting us newbies know that that's a good thing!   Still, twice that number of people took one look at the intially bollixed format and fled.   With good cause, too - the way it posted rendered the piece seriously illegible.

SO...being a newbie, is it really okay to beg, plead, & otherwise indulge in shameless requests for chapter reviews from sci fi folk?   I've been reading through various first chapters in the sci fi group and am just gobsmacked by the caliber of the writing!   I can see already how helpful feedback from forum folk will be.

Hugs all around, O Sibling Souls!

Re: Welcome to the Sci-fi and other Speculative Fiction Forum

Hi Kydd, is that like a promotion? If it is cool well done.

Excuse I, still don't fully understand how this pile of zero's and one's is bolted together.
I'm on my first ever novel, or any piece of writing in-fact. But I'm loving it and having fun. I like the idea of this wee community tucked away. Were all rejects from The Big Bang Theory. :-)
Bonnie your spot on, the caliber is high, which is invaluable for feedback. I have made a mental note to have squint at your work, gee me a week as I'm doing a few zero reviews; there are some writers who's work has been hanging in the departure lounge for weeks, its not right, so I'm on a wee quest to give them some encouragement. Not that I'm any J R Tolein, any review is better than being ignored.

I look forward to chatting with you all, thanks again Kydd.

Cheers me Dears

Re: Welcome to the Sci-fi and other Speculative Fiction Forum

You're all very welcome and I hope we can keep it semi-active and interesting. There's so much good sci-fi being written and so much more to be written. With sci-fi expanding into so many subgenres, how can we go wrong as writers?  Our imaginations are going to be so fat and happy with the speed of science.

Yes, I think that's why I love the Big Bang Theory too.  Sadly, I can relate waaaaaay too closely with the guys.

Hehehehehe.

Re: Welcome to the Sci-fi and other Speculative Fiction Forum

Hi, All!

Newbie question from the village idiot (and trust me, kind & generous souls that you are, any of you who tracked my efforts to even figure out HOW to post for the SS6 will understand the complete & utter accuracy of the term): is this a forum wherein we're allowed to whine, beg, & engage in shameless pleas for reviews?

Need anyone guess why I'm asking?

Hugs, y'all -

Welcome to the forum, Kris. It's sporadic, but that's because we all keep pretty busy writing. big_smile

Re: Welcome to the Sci-fi and other Speculative Fiction Forum

Thx for the warm welcome here. I am happy to start writting sci-fi. Loved it for a very long time. I always believed that I would write Fantasy and then some something more normal. But, I realize now that sci-fi is where I can let my imagination really sore.

I have a very interesting project that is still in planning stages. Hopefull I can get 1st chapter draft up here to see what you guys think.

And Mister D A. Thx fr all your feedback on my other novel. It helps to know some guys here.
Adious for now.

Re: Welcome to the Sci-fi and other Speculative Fiction Forum

Hi Kydd... I just noticed the new (to me) Sci-fi thread here and dropped in to see
that you have a lot of folks stopping by. I usually hang out at the FPH
(Fantasy, Paranormal & Horror) topic. It had a lot more activity in the
past, but I made a lot of friends there too.
I like your new thread topics and will keep coming back. I haven't been too active
in the past year because of health probs and work on my published books. I'm
still working on book 2 "Secret of the Druids" with Cable Hornman for the series
"Tales of the Bard" and will workshop it here on TNBW.
Maybe now my health is a little better I can sit long enough to do some reviews
and work on my chapters. In any event...
Hi Everybody! big_smile

Re: Welcome to the Sci-fi and other Speculative Fiction Forum

Hi Lee! Very happy to see you again. I've seen such a lot of good things written about you and your works.  Congratulations on it all.

Sorry to hear of your health. I can relate. I had spine surgery in May that went 'badly', so I've been dealing with all the complications since then and haven't be able to work.  Other business-related matters with my published books sucked out all my creative juices, so I've been "unproductive" too.  Hopefully, that will change once I take care of these "issues".

Welcome back and thanks for visiting the forum!

Re: Welcome to the Sci-fi and other Speculative Fiction Forum

Hey Kydd, sorry to hear about the spine surgery. Hope everything got fixed and mends well.
(Now stay away from bungee jumping and skiing down steep snow-covered mountains. big_smile )

I have two sci-fi short stories in the works. one is about a gladiator set in the future and
the other story is set on a new colony planet where people mysteriously are being killed.

I'll let you know when they are ready to post here on tNBW.
What have you in the works?
