The Hobbit...1977
For many people 40+, this was our introduction to heroic fantasy: The cartoon adaptation of The Hobbit.
The music...so good.
And...
The way it improved on the story. Yes, improved! Although so much was left out to cram the greatest adventure story ever written into just 77 minutes, in some places the creators of this improved Tolkien's work.
Example:
Read the part in The Hobbit where Bilbo climbs to the top of a tree to check the party's progress through Mirkwood. Then watch the same part of this in the cartoon.
Tolkien never wrote that. He never had Bilbo tear up, so overwhelmed by the beauty of what he saw:
There are moments which can change a person for all time. And I suddenly wondered if I would ever see my snug little Hobbit Hole again. I wondered if I actually wanted to.
This cartoon had such a huge impact on me, that when I saw the now legendary trailer to Jackson's Hobbit, and the dwarves began singing "Over the Misty Mountains Cold" and it didn't sound like the music from the cartoon, it felt wrong.
If you do not have a copy of The Hobbit (1977), here it is on YouTube:

The lantern revealed a symbol of an eye with long, wavy lashes like tentacles, painted white and deeply engraved into the stone. A breeze lifted her hair as Shadyia glanced down the ancient passage.
“What’s down there?” she asked.(Chapter 9)

Yes. I have this on VHS, but I don't own a VHS player anymore! What irony... I always liked how Smaug the Dragon spoke like Jimmy Dean the sausage king.

Also, check out FIRE AND ICE. One of my favorite cartoon movies as a kid. That and THE LAST UNICORN. They probably don't hold up to this day, though.

Response....response...I need to respond.
Well, I don't know who Jimmy Dean is. And you say watch FIRE AND ICE and THE LAST UNICORN, but say they don't hold up to this day, which--actually--The Hobbit cartoon does. The artistry and music are just that good.

You won't get to meet him since he died last year. He hawked his brand of sausage and was a country music singer who had his own show briefly way back when. His biggest hit- hell, probably only hit - was "Big John" which stayed at number one for God knows how long. I'll try to find a link if you don't remember it. Take care. Vern

PS: Forgot to mention, he also played in the Bond movie "Diamonds Are Forever" as a Howard Hughes type person who 007 had to rescue.

You people have a very short attention span.

Was I whining about AT not responding..? Yea, probably. But don't bring up classic animation unless you wanna talk about it, man! And no, FIRE AND ICE doesn't really hold up to this day. But it holds up a helluva lot better than THE HOBBIT... The animation and music was NOT that special in THE HOBBIT. In fact, if Tolkien were alive he'd be embarrassed by such a rendition. In my opine, that is. I have confidence that Peter Jackson will knock it outta the park next summer. If I should live so long to see it, that is. ![]()

Vern knows exactly who Jimmy Dean was. BIG JOHN is right! And you can plainly extrapolate that voice upon SMAUG. Well, maybe not. But you can use your imagination. Frankly, I couldn't believe they gave SMAUG an American accent!! in the first place. Again, I'm sure Peter Jackson will remedy that....

I could sing all the lyrics, and I still can, to Big Bad John when I was five. Just thought you'd like to know. ![]()

Just a note to let you know I saw your novel (or maybe it was conversations?) in the Random Lines today!! I always love those thrills of seeing 'lines' I recognize. Yay!
Did you see it? I wanted in the worst way to let you know, so tracked you down here, because it's where I saw your name.
I always liked the animated Land Before Time movies. That's what I bought for my kids. And Lady and the Tramp. I still have my VHS. And I watched Lady and the Tramp the other day. My son used to bark like a dog wherever I took him. We are Siamee-eese if you please.... Okay.

No, I didn't see it. I love to see my words in print, so I'm sorry I missed it. Thanks for tracking me down!

Well, while you're waiting for the heroin rush of Jackson, you can sniff this 1977 Hobbit glue to hold you over.

Unfortunately, I have every confidence Peter Jackson will miss or misinterpret or view in an entirely different context some parts of "The Hobbit" that I find enjoyable, just as he did with the LOTR Trilogy.
I'll never forgive the guy for leaving out the Scouring of The Shire, the killing of Saruman by Grima and the lack of growth in the characters of Merry and Pippin. I know they got left out because they didn't lend themselves to eye-popping visuals, which seemed to me to be his focus. But that's just a matter of my interpretation versus his.
That doesn't mean I won't go to see the movie when it comes out, but am merely saying I don't expect miracles. What I really expect is that after seeing "The Hobbit" movie I will want to read "The Hobbit" book again, just like after suffering through three LOTR movies I absolutely HAD to re-read the Trilogy. The thing I like about reading books as opposed to watching movies made from the stories in those books is that reading leaves you with much better visuals; what you see in your mind is much more pleasing than what you see on the screen.

Re: The Hobbit...1977
w.e. turner... The movies ran TEN hours as is. What more do you want? I agree the films COMPELLED me to go back and read the books, but you know what? In the end, I actually favored Jackson's vision of the trilogy over my own imagination. (Except for that hobbit-erotic reunion at the end of Return Of The King) The man is an artist and more power to him. The fact that he felt the need to step in the Director's chair and replace Guillermo The Bull kinda scares me, though...
We'll see. Can't wait... In my opinion, THE HOBBIT is actually a superior STORY to LOTR. I'm especially interested in seeing how they handle the aftermath ruination of Laketown.
Jesus, I'm a geek. And showing my age. And I'm not that old, for chrissakes!! ![]()

Re: The Hobbit...1977
The Hobbit is fantastic, i have read it and i am excited for its theatrical release. anyway, watching movies doesn't entirely removes your passion in reading because personally speaking, directors and film makers had somehow forget to put some "important" events in the novel, so you'll end up thinking "what on earth had happened?" then you'll end up wondering so your choice would "grab the book and read it"
Its proven... I am the living evidence. (lol)
