Short Story Publishing

What is the best way to get stories published?  To take my work and make it into an anthology?  Or should I try and get each short story published seperately?

Any suggestions for publishers?
Any suggestions for illustrators?
Should I self publish?

Heeeeeeeeeeeeelp smile

Re: Short Story Publishing

Well, it's always better to shop magazines first.  That way when you do your own anthology later---you can use those as advertising---published in...blah, blah, blah.

If you want recognition---try contests.  More money and more press.

Self-publish last because most stories will be ineligible for magazines once you self-pub.

Re: Short Story Publishing

Hi Tirzah,

Thanks for responding.

I used the website you suggested.  Thank you for telling me about it!

So far I am finding it difficult to determine what the different rights are for if my story were to be published.

For instance take a look at this:

RIGHTS
We purchase all rights, including Web use, and pay on publication. Simultaneous submissions are OK, but should be noted as such. One-time book rights may be returned when the author has found a publisher and can provide an approximate date of publication.

So is this saying that if they publish a story of mine that I can get the rights back if I find another publisher to have it made into a book?  So would this be a worthwhile place to submit my story because when someday in a perfect world it gets published as a book it could be advertised as seen in "XXXX magazine"

Re: Short Story Publishing

That one I would pass on.

Simultaneous submissions means you can send it to more than one magazine at a time as long as you tell them if it gets published elsewhere.
Some mags won't let you do that.

Web Use--means that if you have it posted on your website, you'll have to take it down because they will be the only person providing it digitally.  Does not include password protected workshops.

BUT I would be deeply worried about return of rigthts clause and would not use this one. Because they way they have it worded they could keep you in limbo on your own material if you self-publish.   This one is probably a no-go.

Most will say one time use or they will have time limit.  They get FIRST publication rights, not all rights.   First publication means you promise they will be the first people to put it in print or digital.  Usually there is a time limit and then the rights come back to you.  This is NOT what this one says.

This mag seems hinky and I wouldn't feel comfortable publishing with them at all.  But hey I could be wrong.

Re: Short Story Publishing

Thanks for telling me about this stuff.  I'm still workshopping my stories but am at least trying to find somewhere to send them into once complete.

So far no luck.

Re: Short Story Publishing

first American serial rights and pays upon publication. It welcomes the contributions of both published and unpublished writers. We reserve the right to publish all material from the magazine on our website as a sample of the magazine. This is for display only on a limited time basis. Contributors will be compensated whenever their work is published to generate revenue and not strictly for exposure.

What does first American serial rights mean?

If you are writing a series connected to this story, they get the rights to publish the series installments first before other publishers.

Re: Short Story Publishing

I am dealing with the same question. I put together an anthology of my own short stories and posted it on TNBW. I received good feedback and a lot of helpful nit picking. Now I am looking at making my anthology an e-book on Amazon for Kindle. In fact I am about ready to pull the trigger. I am also thinking about using Create Space for POD paperback publishing. I think the market is moving rapidly in the e-book direction with each electronic device that comes out. I have a Kindle, I love the print, the background, the feel, and the price of books that the Kindle gives me. My anthology has only ten stories. I am not certain how that will go over. I have noticed that well known authors are getting fairly reasonable prices on e-books. On the other hand, as long as there is fresh meat readily seeking fame and fortune prices for books by unknown authors will remain low.
