Don't be embarassed.  You wouldn't have had to 'splain nothin' if I was better at remembering old jokes and then applying some kind of psychic power to figure out what you meant when you weren't saying it.  Or somethin'.  You crack me up anyway, in a good way.

So today it's fish.  Maybe salmon, grilled with a nice simple lemon butter sauce.  And a salad.  Maybe some rice.  Several lagers, fresh and cold.  How about mixed berries with cream for dessert?

Then I'm going to finish this difficult poem about something or other.

big_smile  You guys should really hone your mind reading skills. I mean, really. big_smile

I had a good friend bring a dish of jambalaya over and she swears it's so hot it'll clear me up for a week. She had called me yesterday and told me not to put anything on my menu for dinner tonight. That she wanted to repay a few favors and bring this over. Never one to pass on a meal I said OK.

She showed up here with jambalaya, green salad, corn bread and fruit salad for dessert! Getting ready to put it on the table now.

I do love me some spice. We'll see how this goes...

You've got really nice friends.  Spice is good.  With a Cuban husband you need spice in your life.

My wife is of Slavic descent.  We do a lot of paprika.  I'm of French-Canadian stock.  Meat pies, stews, lots of big fat carbohydrates to get us through the winter.   It's all good.

Tomorrow up to PA to see the Farm and Home show and a winery or two.  Gonna have wifi so have computer will travel.

Later, kids.

Yep.  This dirty old coot votes for Hank as well.

I've got a few quarters handy.  Maybe some Doug Kershaw or Zydeco or Bluegrass from just about anybody.

It all goes good with somethin' out the jug.

It's too late for me, I'm up waaaayyy past my bedtime but I thought I'd pop in for a nightcap. Glad I did. Would've hated to miss you.

See you on the flip flop.

Thanks for the Yeunglings Karen.  Do you mind if I start early this morning?  It's a gray, cold rainy day and my knee joints are achin'.  Free beer always makes it better.   Welcome back.  We missed your pithy observations.

Re: The Late Night Social Club

I need a beer.

It's after 3 in the afternoon on 1-18-12, and I have yet to come to a decision that I promised I would make by the end of the week. I turn to you good folks for your opinion. Here it is:

After quitting my job in February of last year, my (wonderful) husband said to take two years and work on my writing. BUT, I've been offered a job in my old field by a guy that I used to work with, who has opened his own company. The thing is, I don't like him. I never have. But it is a job. The "guilts" are really getting to me for being unemployed. We are OK financially. Not rolling in the dough, but we're getting by. We could do a lot better if I went back to work.

Am I being stupid? Ungrateful? Petty? Anyone have two cents worth of free advice?

Re: The Late Night Social Club

OMG! We bought a Hoover Shampooer and I made the mistake of trying to use it first. I'm lucky to figure out the fax machine and here I am using this thing. I didn't, I don't know, 'secure' the water and solution tank and it spilled all over the rug in my computer room! Then I went to move it and a spring broke somewhere and the lower tank for the dirty water popped off. Claudio's on his way home and I'm gonna get it. Sometimes I feel like Lucy Ricardo, my good intentions blow up in my face and I get the lecture. At least he doesn't play the bongos. I need a good stiff shot.

Well you won't like working for him.  Perhaps he'd do part time, you'd have money coming in---but still time to write.

But to go back to work when you don't have to--then with someone you don't like...I'm not sure that's a good move.

jlmo,  Take the job.  A writer needs some misery and pain to make authentic Art, right?  I mean look at Kafka, look at Camus, look at Scott Adams, look at  a whole buncha those guys and gals.  Suffer.  If you're not going to be a raging nut job like Hemingway or a hopeless alcoholic like Hemingway or a fisherman like St. Peter then you might as well sit home and eat bon-bons and watch daytime tv.  Now let's have a couple more beers and ponder this situation.  Okay.  Enough pondering.  I changed my mind.  Don't take the job.  If you're working who's going to take care of this place?  Besides me, I mean.  Right.  So don't take the freakin' job.

Have another beer with me.  Thank me for the advice later.

Re: The Late Night Social Club

Now, see *hic* that's what I'm shaying! Life's too damn shooort, and too damn, um, um...wait. What?

Oh yeah! See, I don't like the guy. And really, honestly, I like everyone. But this guy, well, we just don't mesh. Never did. I mean, you know, I respect the guy and all, but really. He thought he was God's gift to women fifteen years ago. Now he's convinced of it. If anyone else wanted to hire me, I'd probably not be so, you know, so, hesitant.

I'm working on being more like Hemingway. Bring me a boilermaker. I'll show you how far along I've come.

BTW~I hate daytime TV. I don't even turn the "idiot box" (thanks Dad) on before 7pm. Come to think of it...I hate night time TV too. Anyway. Wait. What?

Cheers (clink) to being unemployed!

Well, of course we do and you've already heard the common sense version. Now, from a legal perspective, it's like this. You basically made an oral contract with said hubby to take two years off to pursue writing. Therefore, you are contractually bound to fullfill said obligation, no ifs, ands, or butts (or other body parts).

Therefore, quit trying to renege on the deal and do your time in the corner of the bar or such other stimulating place as might present itself from time to time. Don't leave yourself open for a painful, life sapping lawsuit; the party of the second part simply will not understand your deliberate sabatage of the agreement and even if an out of court settlement might be reached, it will be a living hell.

And furthermore, tell that would be "boss man" that he is on the verge of being brought up on charges of "alienation of affection"  from your writing. You might even go ahead and wrangle a settlement out of him equal to offered salary and that should satisfy any lingering monetary quilt on your part.

That's my two cents with interest. Take care. Vern

And what Vern said is absolutely true and I'm happy to agree with him before I have one more little tiny nightcap and stumble off to bed.  I feel like it was a productive day helping a fine author person stay on track, drunk and out of legal trouble.

Thank you Vern, Tirzah and whoever the hell I am right now.

G'night.

Re: The Late Night Social Club

Friday, right?  Time for a big ol' pile of shrimp - fried, steamed, chilled.  Some good cole slaw and cheesy baked grits on the side.  Lots of cold beer or a frosty Reisling.  There are a couple of rolls of quarters for the jukebox.  And as a special treat I put a big bowl of candy bars over by the food as a nostalgic dessert.
Let's start this weekend right.

Re: The Late Night Social Club

Well, I told the guy no. I was very nice about it. I took a page from Vern and told him I promised Dart I would do this for two years and I didn't want to let him down. Life long dream, yada yada. He got bored and wound up the conversation soon after that.

Thanks guys!

As an extra big thank you, there's a big ol' skillet of Jambalaya next to the shrimp bowls. I don't make the world's best, but it don't suck. Pass me a beer to wash it down. If folks don't start dipping in soon, I'm gonna eat all the grits myself. Of course, that is a lot of grits. Maybe I'll share.

Woo hoo! It's Friday Night!

It's Saturday morning here in Australia, JL, but if I knew what the hell grits was, I'd probably join you and have them for breakfast!

Good to hear your decision - now you're committed to making the 'writing' thing pay!! I'll pass on the beer given the hour, but I WILL join you with a glass of OJ and champagne. *click* TO YOUR SUCCESS!

Cheers,
Yvonne

Hi Yvonne,  Welcome to the cafe!  Grits are an all purpose food good at any meal.  In fact they probably started as a breakfast food a long, long time ago.  They're a southern US specialty that have found their way onto tables all over the country.   Warm with sweet milk and butter, baked with cheese and shrimp, salted - good stuff any way they're prepared.  But here's my secret for a great dessert -  warm grits laced with a little bourbon and a small drizzle of maple syrup.  You'll never eat porridge again.

And jlmo, excellent decision on the job thing.  You'll be a happier person for it and wiser, too.

I'm heading to the food table.  Then a pitcher from the Yeungling tap.

Re: The Late Night Social Club

Thanks again guys. It was a weight off my chest the moment I hung up the phone.

Jim, you didn't tell Yvonne that grits are made from corn. After that, its all up for grabs. I usually have them for breakfast with extra butter. But now, I gotta try the bourbon/maple syrup recipe. Mmmm....bourb, uh, I mean, Maple Syrup!

I over indulged last night, so I'll just ask for a glass of that fine Riesling you got that back there. Cheers!

Re: The Late Night Social Club

Grits are made from corn? How is that? I thought hominy was made from grits. I eat hominy but no grits, yucky! Today I deactivated my facebook page and so far no one's noticed. It's a distraction when I'm trying to read and write. So today I accomplished both. Wonder how long I can stay away, though.
