Re: Professional Editor - Erin Brown
Hi Erin! Thank you, first of all, for helping us all out.
My question has to do with liability. Imagine a person who has written a collection of satiric essays and shorts, some of which contain slightly disparaging remarks toward public companies (not to say that that person is me, of course...cough, cough). What are the liability issues and, conversely, the free speech rights associated with this kind of situation? Also, what kind of insurance do authors usually buy (if any) to ensure that they are not sued for their work? I am considering having some kind of media lawyer look over my writing before I publish it into anything, but I'm not entirely certain about the rules for any of this stuff...

Find answers about 'editing and editors' in this thread. If you haven't read through here before, it's worth your time.

Re: Professional Editor - Erin Brown
hi I was wondering how does publishing poetry work? This is really confusing because
I hear agents won't represent poets, and most publishing companies won't accept
poetry because it does not sell well... so my question is no matter my skill in poetry
am I wasting my time trying to publish them? If so what is a good first step? thanks!

Hi poetsorrow, Publishing poetry is somewhat difficult but it can be done. Financial reward tends to be small however. My small, and I do mean small, successes have come from sending poems off to small literary journals, arts and entertainment magazines and various competitions. There's a resource online called Duotrope that lists places that are accepting submissions for all kinds of writing and it has a page dedicated to poetry. A great deal of poetry is being published in online journals these days. There are also chapbook competitions, some free - some with modest entry fees (be very careful there), that accept smaller collections. If you are academically connected check into the possibility of a college or university press at your institution. You can also self publish and there are folks here at tNBW that have become quite adept at that route. So there you go. Food for thought. Now I'm going to look for some of your postings. Take care.
