This is what I said last year and it's still just as relevant: If you are not on one of the finalist lists, don't despair. Many writers have not made it to the finals in this competition but have gone on to have their books published and achieve success. As we like to say, the main goal of the competition is to inspire writers to perfect their opening chapters. If your book is better now than it was at the beginning of the competition, then we have succeeded in our goal.
The winners will be announced on July 30, 2011. Good luck to all!

Congratulations to the finalists!
The lantern revealed a symbol of an eye with long, wavy lashes like tentacles, painted white and deeply engraved into the stone. A breeze lifted her hair as Shadyia glanced down the ancient passage.
“What’s down there?” she asked.(Chapter 9)

Uh, Kydd's passed out on the floor... <fan, fan, fan> Okay, she's breathing again!
Thanks, Ceridwen. It's been a great July for me. This just makes it even better. Win or lose, I'm in the company of some fantastic writers (whether they are on the list or not) and that's been a wonderful gift in itself. I'm just honored to be rubbing shoulders with you all!

Re: Strongest Start 2011 Finalists
A hearty congratulations to all who entered and to all the finalists. This competition stands out because of the extraordinary quality of the members of this site and the opportunity to gain from their cumulative wisdom. Corny, but true: the real value of this competition is not in winning, but simply in participating (outside of, well, the money, that is . . . )
