Hi everyone...

I've been thinking about joining for ages but somehow never got around to it.

I'm so glad I did join big_smile

I've spent a day browsing around and I am seriously impressed with what goes in here. It's rare to find an online community with such a great bunch of members.

I've been writing fiction for about 20 years. Had some success (stories in magazines) but never got around to nailing a novel.

For the last 3 years I've been busy building a writing website, but now that it's starting to run on auto-pilot, I can devote a lot more time to my own writing.

You'll find a wide range of interests on the site - meaning you'll get feedback from many angles.  I've found this to be very, VERY helpful while crafting my novels on site.

Welcome!

I write literary fiction - though more at the mainstream end of the scale. (I like a good plot, in other words big_smile)

Yes, I've got loads to submit to the site. Watch this space...

Re: Hi everyone...

A pooka or pookah is a six foot tall invisible rabbit that was in the movie, 'Harvey' with Jimmy Stewart.

For once, me calling someone BUNNY makes sense.  smile

Literary Fiction.  I actually looked this up on Wikipedia today because I didn't know what the hell it meant.

...and after reading Wikipedia's description, I still don't know the hell it means.

wikipedia wrote:

What distinguishes literary fiction from other genres is subjective; and as in other artistic media, genres may overlap. Even so, literary fiction is generally characterized as distinctive based on its content and style ("literariness", the concern to be "writerly"). The term literary fiction is considered hard to define very precisely but is commonly associated with the criteria used in literary awards and marketing of certain kinds of novels, since literary prizes usually concern themselves with literary fiction, and their shortlists can give a working definition.

What the hell?

What the hell?

Literary Fiction---usually---and not always--  starts after or just before the main event.    It is usually sad or introspective.   It's less about plot and more about thoughts, internal growth or personal stagnation.

A commercial fiction book might be about finding love or dealing with death or running from gangsters.   It'll have climaxes and a big reveal.  The plot is more important.

A lit fic book the reader will usually know the big reveal early on.  The book is on the exploration of  the cracks caused by that event or action.  It's like psychoanalysis.  Usually more internal life oriented than plot.

That's the best I can explain it.

OK, so Literary Fiction would be about a man's thoughts the night before he goes to the electric chair.  It may not even mention what he did to deserve it.  Commercial Fiction would be the story of the man doing the crime, getting caught and then would end with him getting cooked.

Do I have that right?

I actually hate the term literary fiction, because it sounds kind of elitist.

Anyway, I've researched definitions of all the various types of fiction, and here is what I wrote about Literary Fiction on my site.

(I hesitated to post that link, because I don't want to give the impression I'm here to promote my site. I'm not. So, please do NOT click on any of the ads.)

Harvey

P.S. I think I would classify what I write closer to Mainstream Fiction.

P.P.S. I'm definitely going to be posting some of my work soon. Trouble is, there's only 24 hours in a day, and I have to sleep for at least one of them lol

Unless of course you hate the term.... And then of course the term will have to hate you back. How do you like being hated? smile

Hello Harvey --

Welcome, and thank you for your fabulous website. Very insightful, practical, and above all: HELPful.  I'm anxious to read your work.

Welcome Harvey!  Have been a bit busy last few weeks etc.. cannot believe the number of new names!  Can't get to all of them to say welcome but will start with you..

The site is a place to grow and get feedback from a very eclectic group of writers.  Perfect audience in my mind.  Your work is seen from many different angles.

More or less with variations.  The man could die in the chair the first chapter and spend the whole book discussing how he got there.

You would already know how it ended.  Hah.

Lit fic has a thousand variations but basically if it is seriously plot oriented, its probably not Lit Fic.
