Adventure Tournament Cover

You've read about it, you've read me yammer about it... some of you have even read it. The Adventure Tournament is now available, from Amazon.com or directly from me for personalized copies. Escape the escape, and experience the fantasy... with attitude.

Original Post Content:

I've been indecisive a long time about whether to get an artist to do the cover, or act on an idea I had last Fall.  I finally decided I could just save time and expense by doing it myself, and so I've come up with the following cover.  Being that the book has a lot of parody and references to, well... everything... but especially fantasy literature and video games, it was only fitting the cover reflected that.  So I came up with a parody of the title screen from the original Legend of Zelda for the NES.

LoZ Title Screen:

I plan on publishing through CreateSpace and will get the ball rolling as soon as I dive through the manuscript one more time and weed out any lasting mistakes or omissions.

Re: Adventure Tournament Cover

I don't remember every playing Zelda...  although I know that little screen for some reason.
It does look great! I think it's quite fitting.   Love the back cover too. I couldn't see your blurb... Blurbs fascinate me atm.  I'm trying to figure them out -- how to write one.

Lee went with Createspace too. so they are pretty good eh?

Good luck with it!  tell me when it's published.

I've done well with Createspace for two anthologies of my student work. Createspace is easy to work with, can be very cheap although they tempt you with a lot of options.

Re: Adventure Tournament Cover

Yes, over the winter I tested them by creating an anthology of shorter work I've written over the course of the last decade.  I was very pleased with the quality I got back, and it was a thrill seeing something I had written in book form for the first time.

The actual image is much bigger, but photobucket resized it on its own.  The blurb is basically just what I wrote for the query letter I posted with the novel.

Re: Adventure Tournament Cover

Hey Nicholas, I came to check out your cover. That was a good idea you had for your cover. What did you do it in? It seems you have more talents than one wink
Two questions:
- any copyright concerns by using the Zelda idea?
- Sorry I have to ask, and you can get mad at me, I deserve it. But pink? I know men wear pink nowadays, but pink for the background color of the cover? neutral

Good luck with CreateSpace. Let me know when it is available, and I can leave a review in Amazon! I'm thinking of doing the same with Monarch Effect. Out of my 3 novels, it's the one I'm willing to use to play and learn about self-publishing.

Re: Adventure Tournament Cover

Parody and satire is protected by law.  As long as I don't use the Zelda logo or anything copyright protected by Nintendo, it will be fine.  I'm even covered on the rocks and waterfall at the bottom, as that's a photo from my personal collection.

And since pink is the color of the original image background, I used the same due to recognizability.  It wouldn't be much of a parody if I used blue or something.  And it will stand out on people's personal shelves (as well as bookstore shelves, should I get any independent stores interested in stocking it).  Plus pink and black are the colors of one of my favorite professional wrestlers, Bret "Hitman" Hart.

The cover was created in Photoshop using a template from CreateSpace.  Yes, I can do okay photoshopping, plus compose rudimentary music and I used to be a video editor.  I'm blessed with a very quick learning curve. wink

And I didn't think of it until recently, but this cover is even more apropos for my first novel, since my first exposure to the fantasy genre was through this game when I was seven years old.  And it was Dragon Warrior a couple of years later that got me hooked on the genre.  I didn't even know there was such a thing as fantasy literature until years afterward.

Re: Adventure Tournament Cover

The proof copy just arrived today.  It looks great, just some minor adjustments I need to do where the images bled over onto the spine, and my name is a little off center.  The blurb text is also too small, so I need to change font or resize.  I posted some pictures on my facebook profile:

Re: Adventure Tournament Cover

I should also mention that this gorgeous image that Erith made, like my cover, is also a parody. For comparison:

Lou: I don't know. She seemed unsure herself.

No worries. I read it, liked it, commented. That's how 'The Hack' rolls. Keep working.
