newbie

HI! New to this site. I can't wait to get started.

I have always dreamed of being a writer. Only now am I in a place where I am able to begin working on that dream. The kids are finally old enough to not need ALL of my attention all the time,  my husband has his band to keep him busy, so I get some free time now to do as I please and a room to go to to be away from all the noise.

I blog and write short stories. I also write articles.

I had a mentor a long time ago who helped me more than he realized. Unfortunately this person has passed on. I am glad to have known him.

I am hoping to connect with people who can help give me some direction and advice.

Welcome Joy!

What is your genre?  For example, I enjoy writing low-magic, heroic fiction.  Telling us will get the attention of people who enjoy reading/reviewing your material.

Do you know about the Strongest Start Competition?  Deadline is June 8, 2011.

Do you know how to make a link to your work in the forums?

She runs with the one she can’t keep up with.  Strange he slows down so desperate to stop her.  They meet in the middle.  They both run from the one who hunts them.  They drop to the forest floor frozen.

I'm looking forward to reding your work.

I am not real good with html yet but I have a cheater link that I use and change the information in. I use it at AC. If you have a better way I would love to know it.

My favorite genre to write is erotic fiction however, I am currently trying to write what I am hoping to be a mystery and also a drama. I have a problem tho. I can't stop second guessing myself as I type and I am hoping to unlearn that bad habit.

Re: newbie

Erotic fiction?  I would love to have your thoughts on Shadyia: Dark Desires.

I am not sure what you mean by "second guessing myself."  I am guessing  that you keep re-writing and re-writing the same few chapters over and over, trying to make them perfect.  If so, welcome to the club!  We all do that.  We want perfection to flow from our finger tips like maple syrup on a Spring day in Vermont.  We want our fellow writer wannabes to oooohhhhh and ahhhhhhhhh as if they are watching fireworks on the the Fourth.

This is probably the single reason few people actually finish their first book.

A few things:

1.  You are not an editor.  There are these people who are paid to do that job.  They are called editors.

2.  Writing is damn hard work.  Anyone who tells you different is selling you ocean-front property in Wyoming.  Get used to it.

3. As Louis L’Amour said,  "If you’re going to be a writer, the first essential is just to write. Do not wait for an idea. Start writing something and the ideas will come. You have to turn the faucet on before the water starts to flow."

4. The project you are working on now may be your masterpiece, or it may be an exercise that leads to your masterpiece.  Both are equally important, just as the top of a long ladder is just as important as the bottom.

5.  Use a lot of metaphors when trying to get your ideas across.  Readers like that.

You may have noticed that (some) people put a link to their book in their signatures.  You may wish to do the same.

Under "Forum Profile" you will see a "Personality" clicky.  In that, you will see "Compose your signature."  You need to write an html code, like this:  [ url=http://incert the web link for your book here[/url ]

(Keep in mind, I had to add a space between "[" and "url" at the beginning and "/url" and "]" at the end, or the silly thing would think I am typing a link.  You need no space there.)

To add color, you can do [ color=blue/red/yellow/green/etc] and end with [ /color]   Again, no space after the "["

Re: newbie

AT Yes! It is like I have Writers OCD or something.. it is so annoying! .oO( It might be ADD too lol) I think I would probably do better if I covered the screen and didn't worry about grammar and spelling. Also I tend to get intimidated by other people's work. I am working on this too. I keep telling myself for every person that doesn't like what I write there are others who will like what I write..

LOL @ #1 I promise to work on this..

I will definately have a look at your story.

Thank all of you for making me feel at home. I am glad I happened upon this site.

Re: newbie

Hey Joy, welcome!

It's easy for those of us who have taken the first steps to dispense advice. But know we've ALL been there and are in varied stages of working out the very same issues. Like you, I was intimidated too but then after reviewing for a while and getting the hang of how the site works, I took a deep breath and posted. It wasn't pretty. I was lambasted from grammar and punctuation, all the way to a lack of plot.  For some that's a blow that's hard to get past, for others like me, it only made me dig deeper and that helped me grow as a writer.

I've dabbled in erotica myself, but found a new love for romantic women's fiction. If you want to check out the novel in my signature, I'll be happy to reciprocate. It's pretty much sensuality, romance, drama, intrique all rolled into one.

Enjoy the site!
