Re: What about a book club?
That would give Jilly something (something else, that it) to be afraid of financially ... she could fear mom doing the same to the bookstore.

Re: What about a book club?
Sorry, guys.
I'd actually thought about it- making Lana an actual visible part of this novel. But then when I'd finished it, I'd thought that maybe she seemed more mysterious by never making an appearance. What do y'all think- did I do it right, or did I take the easy way out? Do you think it'd be important to at least include Lana in this?

Re: What about a book club?
Nah, we don't need to meet the witch to hate her. I kind of like the fact that she never actually makes an appearance. But she could pull strings from afar.
And there could be things in Jilly's memories about her. And weird little things that have happened over the years that Jilly blames on her, without knowing for sure.
It's definitely not essential -- the story's great as it is -- but providing a little detail earlier over why Jilly and Daniel fear Lana would make her an even bigger mysterious menace.

Re: What about a book club?
I was thinking that. What about opening the book with a nightmare from Jilly's past- instead of her just waking up from one? Would that add drama?

Hmmm. Ok. Now. Guys. Any idea of just what the nightmare should be?

Re: What about a book club?
Nightmares for Jilly? Here goes, brainstorming as I go . . .
Jilly is suffering through the flames of hell and the devil looks surprisingly like Lana
Same concept, she is on a highjacked airplane and -- surprise the terrorist is Lana
You could carry that theme of Lana being the bad guy through any number of situations -- horror film type, being chased by an axe murderer, shot at by a sniper, hunted by a monster, the list goes on.
She could also have recurring nightmares about actual traumas -- instead of hidden subconscious messages.
You might consider checking out some books on interpreting dreams and find what symbols are believed to represent the fears Jilly has and use them.
Okay, my brain storm is slowing to a trickle now. I'll add more if I think of anything later.

Re: What about a book club?
You rock. I was thinking of going more literal- an actual event from her past. So the reader gets straight off just why she's as scared as she is- so they'll understand it, sympathize with her and *want* her to stay hidden and safe.
What do you think?

Re: What about a book club?
I like that idea. You are right. It's a good way to clue the reader in to specifics about Lana without having the need to bring her back. It will really add to the suspense of the story. Because the reader will constantly be wondering IF Lana will actually turn up and have a more tangible reason for that fear.

Re: What about a book club?
Probably a dream from a time when Jilly was pretty young -- those have a lasting impact. And it will put in the reader's mind the concept of Jilly as tiny and Lana as this large, overbearing presence.

That's good. Maybe from the time when her mother tried to drown her.

Who snuck these forums underneath all the other ones! I so want to be involved in this....but am too lazy to read all 6 pages of back posting. Can someone tell me what's going on and how I can join? It looks as if you've already picked a book and are going through it....but, if'n it's not too hard, I would love to jump in. ![]()
