Pamela Black's Overview
At the moment I'm working to polish my short story Confessions of a Fat Chick for a May contest. I'd really like to get the short story published because I believe it will help a great deal when looking to find a publisher for the book.
As far as the book goes, my goal is to have a polished copy by May 2009.
Perfection must be a lovely state of being. Saves all that unnecessary self-examination.

Re: Pamela Black's Overview
Pamela,
I think you're absolutely right about getting something published as a way to get a foot in with publishers. Let us know what we can do to help with that!
Peace!
Sarah
Okay, this is now turning into an issue, so let me put it in my sig file so everyone knows upfront: I don't read or review fiction that includes sexual violence. ] I just don't. I will fight my way through sexual violence in your memoir, but not in your fiction. I apologize in advance for anyone who is inconvenienced by this.

Pamela,
I think your goals are realistic and smart. Is the story on the site? I'd like to read it.

Read the original I think. Let's move on it, you are the closest to submitting a piece.
What is the deadline?

Re: Pamela Black's Overview
It's the short I'm entering. The deadline is the fifteenth, postmarked by the fifteenth.
Sorry, Sarah, excuse gone, you can cover the short in an hour or so, still plenty of time left for your own lovely story.
I've rewritten it, so if you guys could and would, take a look at both and give me your thoughts on which changes to keep and which to lose in addition to any other input.
I'm a big girl and the contest is going to be tuff, so please, don't hold back.
Thank you everyone for the support.
Brian has also looked it over as well as Bronsa, so I thank them as well.
I'll go ahead then and post the rewrite. I'll name it the rewrite so ya'll will know.
OH, BTW, computer guy came and I now have dependable internet, again.
GO ME!
So I'm in for Monday nights discussion.
Pamela

Hi, Pam. I just printed out your story. I gave a really lame review in January, when I was in the middle of reading your book. I'll do a better one here. Soon. I know you have a deadline.

Sorry,
Butting into your group here but Pam knows what a huge fan I am of this moving memoir, (both the short story and the novel-in-progress) so I thought I'd make it easier by pasting in the link for everyone.

Re: Pamela Black's Overview
Pamela,
I just posted my review... but I was wondering if you had any specific questions now that we've all (I think) had a chance to post our initial reviews? Anything we can help you work out, or feedback that is confusing?
Peace and all good things!
Sarah

Re: Pamela Black's Overview
Pamela, If you win the contest are you still able to publish the book? How does that work?

Re: Pamela Black's Overview
I can make an educated guess. Many, many memoirs have "chapters" that were originally stand-alone pieces published elsewhere. I just looked through the stack of six on my desk, and ALL six had parts previously appear. I think that, in general, a nominal fee--and sometimes, just recognition--is given to the original publisher.
This is different for fiction, where I hear folk aren't as generous and it can get expensive to republish smaller works wrapped into a larger one.
Or, again, so I hear.

Re: Pamela Black's Overview
Yes. In fact I'm thinking it could help me get the book seen.
I'm not holding my breath on winning. There will be thousands and thousands of entries from far better and more experienced writers than I.
I'm satisfied that I wrote the strongest version of Fat Chick I could and entered. That for me is a win. I figure it will take many more rewrites and many more contest to get it good enough to win. Everything is a learning process.
But let's say, by some act of God, I do win, well, part of the prize is a meeting with Coldwater Press, I believe is the name of the Publishing house, and I think they said six publishers or agents or any combination thereof. SO, let's say Fat Chick won, which it won't, I won't hear back until the end of October. Then in April or May they would fly me to NYC for the meeting with Coldwater and the six other combined adgents/publishers. My goal is to have a finely polished copy of Fat Chick the book to present at that time.
Being able to include the contest for the short should also make me a more attractive author to some hungry agent out there too, I would think.
I'm not all together sure of any of this, but from what I've read and researched this seems to be the way.
SO, I hope that answered your question and wasn't too confusing to understand what I was trying to say.
Bottom line...........I'm just making this stuff up as I go. I'm taking advantage of the good resources out there to try and educate myself, but in the end, I'm just making it up.
Pamela

Re: Pamela Black's Overview
So, I hope I don't sound too dumb, is winning a contest the same as a publication? It seems different to me somehow, not better or worse, just different.

Re: Pamela Black's Overview
Nancy,
For some contests yes, for some contests no. I am entered in the West Virginia Writer's Conference, sponsored by the state Arts counsel. It includes a cash prize, but not publication. I think Pamela's contest includes both?
