Writer working with Illustrator
If I choose to self publish a book and work with an illustrator - what type of compensation or arrangement should be made with the illustrator?
Any help would be great

Re: Writer working with Illustrator
I've heard it's best to give the illustrator a flat fee, rather than a portion of royalties. It keeps the relationship cleaner.
When I needed some line drawings for a book a indie published, I found an illustrator I liked online. Since I only wanted to use one image, he was nice
enough to let me use it for free. I just made sure to credit him in the acknowledgments. If you use already made graphics,
some are inexpensive to use, like $10 per image. gettyimages.com is one of several sites out there.
My name is Dwight Okita (aka worldbeat99). I also design websites, book trailers, and blogs.

Re: Writer working with Illustrator
Depends on the project or the illustrator... I made a children's book and paid the illustrator a flat fee as project, another illustrator wants royalties for another project, but then again, he is a better illustrator and has worked with DC and White Wolf and we would do the project as a partnership, with, of course, the writer having the largest share, (which only has to be as little as 1% mind you).
That one is still on the air basically because the writer(yours truly) has to come up with an ending that the illustrator will like and approve (partnerships..... pfft!)
Case by case...
Cheers
