Authors Beware
Subsidy Publishers: Vanity Publishers in Sheep's Clothing
http://www.sfwa.org/for-authors/writer-beware/vanity/
A subsidy publisher's contract might look something like this:
Royalties are paid based on net profit. Net profit is calculated by taking the sale price MINUS retail discount MINUS PRODUCTION COSTS (printing, etc.). Net profit is split 50/50 with the author so the the author’s royalties are 50% of net profits of the sale.
I've been doing research on small presses. Thought I'd share this for good or bad. Know what you're getting into and what you're giving up, and why self-publishing might be the better option of the two.

Re: Authors Beware
Hi Sharon,
This is a great resource.
I've had an excellent small press experience myself, but over the past six months or so less-than-satisfactory stories have come to me from friends and colleagues who signed on with other companies that billed themselves as 'small press', but aren't really a true press at all. The link you posted gives some useful guidelines for telling the difference.
I still say, if you land a solid well-respected small press, it's a much better option than self-publishing. But you gotta make sure they are well respected and _real_ before you sign on.
I've been thinking about working up some thoughts on this for my livejournal blog. If/when I get around to it, I'll let you know, in case you find it helpful.

Being so new to the writing/publishing business, this was extremely informative. The last thing I want to do is screw myself over whenever the time comes to seek of publisher.
Thanks for the post!

Re: Authors Beware
Crap I thought I commented on this yesterday at work but my reply must have gotten eaten. ANYWAY, thank you, Sharon. This was a great, informative post. I traveled to the fifth level of Google hell the other day trying to find out what a "boutique" publisher was. Turns out it's a publisher who specializes in a certain genre. Why can't they just say "We publish fantasy and sci-fi." "We publish lit fic." Sighhhh jargon.

Re: Authors Beware
Diana,
AbsoluteWrite is a great resource. Thanks! I was able to spend some time reading through it this morning and came across this about Briona Glen Publishing. Since they're active' on this site, I'll post the link: http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthr … 13out:home (Maybe they'll want to reply.)
Excerpts plucked from the BEWARES & BACKGROUND forum thread discussion, I quote:
"But, really, if your goal here is to disabuse us of our notions regarding Briona Glen, then why not answer the points Momento Mori and others bring up? If that isn't your goal, then why did you stop by here in the first place? Did you expect us to take your assertions regarding publishing (that don't have much in the way of facts behind them) and simply shut up?"
"(Point: No one gets a free pass on AW, especially in the Bewares & Backgrounds section.)"
"And, really, the reason we're asking these questions and making these points is because we want to know the answers you have to give. (Well, that and we don't want what we see as misinformation spread around for the unwary to find. Granted, if you provide support for your assertions, maybe you can prove that what your saying about commercial publishing isn't misinformation.)"

From dphillips:
"So I figured I could do better, researching what I needed to do to succeed at self-publishing. While I could do the massive extra work involved in self-determination, I knew there were many writers for whom this would be difficult.
Then came Briona Glen, offering the best of both worlds- taking away the cost and risk and "stigma" of self-publishing, while offering quality control, speed-to-market, and authorial control. As a small house, they'd keep overhead and costs low, and work their butts off to promote new writers and help them gain a readership."

^ I can't speak for BG myself, but I saw that post a while ago and I think BG has drastically changed their "mission" and goals since then. The writers I have spoken with who have work forthcoming from BG are nothing but satisfied with the experience so far. Their new website has eliminated all the stuff that thread mentions. They're a very new press but have recently acquired some employees with extensive publishing backgrounds and I think that's helped them.

Re: Authors Beware
That's good to know. It wouldn't hurt Briona Glen to do some damage control and dispel any misconceptions on that forum. Straight from the horse's mouth, help poor dphillips out. Otherwise, the claims are still there.
I'm sorry, but I just don't see the 'extensive publishing background': http://isospinner.com/what-we-do.html
But it doesn't mean they won't GAIN experience. I wish them luck.

Guess you gotta start somewhere. But the creative director apparently brought a bunch of experienced people with her who aren't mentioned. BG would do good to at least address that thread, though - it's the first thing that comes up when I googled their name besides their website. Doesn't exactly help their image.

By the way, I remembered you saying Linen Press was on your to-sub list... don't. The owner emailed me yesterday saying she is booked for publication through 2012. So nice that her website doesn't say that - I wasted a bunch of time tweaking my synopsis to her specifications.

Don't you hate that? I hadn't gotten around to them yet, so thanks! I think the best thing we writers can do is keep each other informed of whatever we find out there. Good or bad. It DOES take an enormous amount of time tailoring cover letters to each publisher. I feel like such a bullshit artist by day's end...

HAHAHAHA! Your daily dose of irony served piping hot... ![]()
I was particularly irritated because the specifications were "DON'T TELL ME THE PLOT IN YOUR SYNOPSIS." I was like, huh?!?! Oh well. You live and learn, I guess. I feel like most of the places I sub to they just want to hear how awesome they are and why I want them to publish me. It's like applying to grad school all over again.

Re: Authors Beware
I know... They have egos you have to appeal to. Like we writers.
We want to be told how great we are, and they want to be told how great they are and how we admire their catalog yada yada... (and all of the places I send to, I do admire their stables.)
I must've seen it in a different thread, but a good synopsis is important in the novel-in-progress Faulkner category. It's ridiculous how important! But a lot can be made of the story's start when it's accompanied by a really good synopsis that shows the judges there's a NOVEL that's IN progress. Good luck next year. It's never too early to start, if Eggshells isn't published by then. ![]()

Re: Authors Beware
Has anyone heard of or gotten letters from a "new international publishing house, called JustFiction! Edition?
I received the following email (which I am assuming came from her research on tNBW):
Dear Ms. Deb,
I am writing on behalf of a new international publishing house, JustFiction! Edition.
In the course of a web-research I came across a reference of your manuscript Fall From Grace and it has caught my attention.
We are a publisher recognized worldwide, whose aim it is to help talented but international yet unknown authors to publish their manuscripts supported by our experience of publishing and to make their writing available to a wider audience.
JustFiction! Edition would be especially interested in publishing your manuscript as an e-book and in the form of a printed book and all this at no cost to you, of course.
If you are interested in a co-operation I would be glad to send you an e-mail with further information in an attachment.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards

I did some research and Writer Beware has a warning about this company although others who have worked with them have written about positive experiences. As difficult as it is to get published, I am very wary of publishers contacting ME and offering publication in the ebook and print format! Any thoughts? Deb

Re: Authors Beware
I am suspicious of any publisher who randomly appears with a foreign address. Maybe that's just me - but whenever I post something on Craigslist the scammers have Europen addresses.
So I'm an idiot and didn't scroll down to read your entire post. To me they're as good as a scam, plain and simple.

Dear Ms. Deb: (This greeting alone is a red flag!) ![]()
Assuming you didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday, it's a scam. The thing is, legitimate small presses do not go trolling writer's websites offering publication to writers who have written 9 chapters of a 1st draft. ![]()
Here's something about them, from a blog about their parent company, LAP LAMBERT (where they claim they don't edit or proofread):
"The problem as I see it is multifaceted: it is an unsolicited email, comes from abroad, is clearly a form letter (a keyword search verifies this, producing a verbatim letter with another signature), obviates getting an agent (a really bad sign), continually stresses how it is not a vanity press, insists that it publishes with no cost to the author (another bad sign), requires, according to the testimonials on their website, giving a bank account number (you know, to "deposit royalties"), and finally that I am not a fucking moron. I recently joined an academic networking site where all this information was available, and it makes me an easy target, I think. So, what I'm saying is be careful and practice safe publishing."
(There you have it. Another Vanity Press parading around in sheep's clothing...)

Hi All
Just an update for any who are considering CreateSpace for self publishing. They are efficient, approachabe, and considerate of "our" needs. The price I was quoted for the kind of service I require is very reasonable. Considering the guidance they have provided, I am confident that I won't need even half the assistance ...next time. I expect Gladys Tripalong will make it to the "Amazon" before Christmas. IF anyone would like additional information, my email is on my 'Kyla' profile. Hope I can be of assistance to some of you. I checked on their website again and see they only have one book in their 'store'. I don't see where there is anyone with any real publishing experience. Nor do I see anyone with any editorial experience (having a published book which they edited--novel, not an anthology or comic). Their main areas of expertise seem to hinge on their IT guy. For putting on smashwords and Kindle, etc. Start-ups are nice, but not if they don't have the expertise to back up their 'project'. I'd like to see how they're doing a year from now. If they go belly up, what happens to the author's rights, I wonder?

How are you doing on your thoughts--still working them up? One thing I'm finding is a glut of new 'publishers' with no prior publishing experience (other than self-publishing, and downloading on smashwords), with no professional editing experience, stepping in to fill the voracious appetites of over-eager unpublished writers. Many of these new 'publishers' are 'writers' themselves, and claim to identify with "all that good writing going unpublished, O the humanity." I think the fledgling writer's rush to publish is easily exploited. Usually regretted. These types of new 'publishers' give well-respected small presses a bad name. The road to publication is like surfing: Be patient and your wave will come. ![]()

Oops, I, uhm, forgot to let you know. I wrote up something very informal for my livejournal blog. Mostly referring folks to the SFFWA site you'd already mentioned, and then a few personal tips of my own. I think it just comes down to doing one's research, and not getting carried away with the excitement of the first offer. Which you are doing, and seem all set to do.

Hi Rita, that was a great Live Journal article! Thanks for the info. One thing I was wondering, do you have a link to a list of small presses? Or can you point me in the right direction?
Also, if you're submitting a novella to them. Do you normally need an agent, or will they consider non-agented material? thanks!!
