Best site to self-publish?
I'm really debating self-publishing my Songbird novel. It just doesn't seem like something an agent will take on (since everything I've read says if an agent sees a flashback it's pretty much an automatic no, and that is something I can't change about the book).
I've been on CreateSpace for a while, and had a proof copy done for free thanks to Nano. But are they a good site for self-publishing? I've been considering Lulu as well. Ideally, I'd like to have it available in print and Kindle formats on Amazon.
Any thoughts?

Re: Best site to self-publish?
Penang, Kat and I are getting our co-written Waiting for Karl Rove up on Createspace right now, and I've also got The Wisdom of Repugnance almost ready there, too. Both have been put up on Kindle as well.
I'm awaiting my proof copies so I can let you know what they look like when I get them. These are both books that would be a harder sell for agent/publishers, but both 'different' and provocative enough that I think it will be easier to drum up interest on. That's why we decided to do it. With self-publishing, you have to do a lot of internet 'selling' of your book so it's a full time job getting the word out.
I'll keep you updated as to what I think, but really there's no way to know till you get it out there and start pounding the pavement. I formatted it and did the cover myself, so you have to rely on yourself to make the product look professional. I"ve bought some createspace(and other) self-pubbed books that looked HORRIBLE, so I'm hoping ours don't look like that! ![]()

Ang, Diana (Cadfael) used somebody in her neck of the woods, and she's been very happy with the production end, and it seems her first book is doing well with lots of downloads to Kindle. She's now working on her second, going the same route. You might want to talk with her.

Re: Best site to self-publish?
Thanks Ladies! I'm going to go ahead and use Createspace and Smashwords for ebooks. I'm pretty happy with the cover I've done for the Createspace, and last night Tirz was helping me with ideas for the ebook cover. Too bad I'm so picky!! I think I've found something I want to use for the cover, but I'm not going to purchase the pic until I'm actually ready to get it up. Right now I'm doing another edit, then I'll hit it one more time before putting it up.
When I did a proof copy last year for Songbird (without publishing it) I had the formating all wrong and it was gigantic! (720 pages for a 63K word book!) So this time I'm going to be more careful.
Good luck, Jeni! I'd love to know how your experience works out.

Re: Best site to self-publish?
Oh lord, Penang - getting the e-books set up properly was a slow walk through hell! HAHAHAH And WFKR had 630 FOOTNOTES that the e-books don't support so I had to go in and incorporate all the footnotes into the text in a 'readable' way. I think I was homicidal for a few days there!
Formatting for e-readers is a pain in the ass!! ![]()

I'll probably try and get the createspace stuff done first since I'll have to wait for the proof copy, and then work on the ebook while I wait.

Yeah, the good thing with the paperback is that they'll keep rejecting it till you get it right as far as the cover and formatting. They'll send you e-mail after e-mail telling you the problems with it. Make sure you download one of their templates for the size you want and import your book straight into that because that saves you a HUGE amount of time! You may have already done that, but I thought I'd mention it because there was a STEEP learning curve for me in that regard. Once I had the template it was much easier. ![]()

Re: Best site to self-publish?
I once saw a pizza advertised for ten dollars. When I reached the pizza place he said, that only includes the cheese. Everything I added was an additional two dollars. Ultimately my ten dollar pizza cost twenty dollars. Self publishing is so much like this. It's the toppings you don't purchase that will hurt the most. The two hundred dollar difference between a generic cover and a professional cover means so much to the end result. I strongly suggest you pay that painful four-hundred dollars to get a professional review (i.e Kirkus) as opposed to getting a review from your cousin who works in the library. It's a gamble, but a great review from Kirkus will sell books. Another topping is comprehensive editing. This is another layer of hurt, but well worth the pain. In my opinion, you are going to have to shell out $2,000.00, one way or another. Might as well go for the Pizza Supreme with lots of toppings. I wish you all the best in your publishing dreams.

Re: Best site to self-publish?
Well, if you're proficient in Photoshop, covers aren't difficult. In fact, I did our cover, plus one for another book and it looks fantastic. Better than some traditionally published books I've seen - though to be fair, I am fluent in video/picture editing so I had that going for me.
Formatting is a big issue, but it's not unsurmountable. With the ready-made templates, a book with over six hundred footnotes looks great on the page. I'm very pleased.
Editing is the biggest thing. YOu HAVE TO take time and edit and re-edit. I don't care if I have to go over proof copies till I'm blue in the face, I'll get those damn errors!
I'll look into th e Kirkus review, though. Might be a good idea. It's all about marketing, for sure. But having a proof copy in my hands, I can assure you that it can be done. Just takes time and patience. I've seen some badly edited self-pubbed books out there - even badly published traditional ones.
As far as money goes, I haven't layed out anything but 39 dollars so far. ![]()

Re: Best site to self-publish?
I've paid $10 so far, and I know I'll do the $39 propian with Create Space. Right now I have a code to get a free proof copy, so no paying for that. Hopefully I won't be needing an endless number of those. Right now I'm hoping to have it ready to go this summer.

Re: Best site to self-publish?
Ang, I opted for the $39 pro plan when I did my students' published nano novels. The following year, they kept me on the proplan and waived the fee, so I got it free for the next year (I suspect because I didn't sell that many...it was just for the class). I understand what Jeni's saying about being good with visual stuff. I'm good with the edits and can do that part myself as far as grammar and punctuation and such. I was able to keep both of my student books to the $39 proplan fee plus the $8 for the proof copy....total spent $47 for a very salable book. It looks good and I'm happy with it. Yes, getting the hang of the template is a bit labor intensive at first.

Anyone with an opinion of Fastpencil.com? I use them for their writing tools (I can get to it from anywhere online - apps for iphone/ipad etc).

NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. Every November it is a contest to write 50,000 words in 30 days. It starts Nov1, and ends Nov30. When you've written your 50,000 words you upload a scrambled file to verify and then in December you get the goodies, which includes a free proof copy of your book.

Re: Best site to self-publish?
I used Lulu when I self published my book. Was able to get it on Amazon.com shortly after. I just recently used Amazons site to create my book for e-readers. I have fairly good luck with both of these. Have not tried Createspace as of yet and am thinking about trying it sometime.

Re: Best site to self-publish?
CreateSpace has a little better binding and I find loading the covers a bit easier than Lulu but that's about it difference wise.
I have instructions on making a cover without Photoshop if anyone wants the article link.![]()
